Brownridge Bears Update

29 Sep

Hello Brownridge Families,

Happy Friday! I am a strong believer in on-going and frequent communication. Keeping you informed of things happening at Brownridge is important. Here are ways you will be able to access information. Throughout the week I will be blogging (sign up at to receive the blogs). You will receive information about things happening at school, activities happening in YRDSB, and more. In addition to blogging, you can follow us on Twitter @brownridgeps (setting up an account is simple- and you can even check out our tweets without signing up). You can also access our school website at Periodically we will be sending Eblasts to your email with additional information. Please ensure we have your most updated email address (there are issues with hotmail/gmail addresses- if you have a hotmail/gmail address, you may not be receiving our Eblasts.) Let the office know your email address if you have not received an email from us this year.

 Reorganization at Brownridge

We are compliant with ministry cap sizes and classrooms. As such, we do need to reorganize at Brownridge for the 2017-2018 school year.

Club Creation

At our “Welcome Back to School” assembly students were invited to come up with ideas for student clubs they would like to have at Brownridge. They were then encouraged to find a staff member who was willing to supervise the club.

The level of initiative students took was truly AWESOME. Stay tuned for more information coming your way soon about these clubs and others that have yet to be determined!

 School Council Meeting

Join us for our first school council meeting on Monday, October 2 at 6:30 in the library. Come out to meet me (Mr. Gold), other parents and be in the know. See how you can get involved in our community building and amazing upcoming volunteer opportunities at the school. Like we tell the students, what you put into your year is what you get out of your year. Please join the team in one way or another

PLT- Professional Learning Teams for teachers

Teachers have been busy determining areas of growth for themselves as they will be participating in Professional Learning Teams throughout the school year. Similar to our students, promoting a love of learning and being lifelong learners are key to improving one’s practice.

 Be a difference maker

Students are being encouraged to be difference makers. No matter how big or small, short or tall one is, you can have impact. Whether it is having a lemonade stand to raise money for an animal shelter or hospital, whether it is to write a letter to the city to express a concern and make a difference to help the community, or to help an organization that supports those in need, students who participate in these kinds of activities are heroes and will be recognized at character assemblies. Just make sure they let Mr. Gold know about their actions.

 2017-2018 Theme at Brownridge

TRY EVERYTHING by Shakira from the movie Zootopia

This year we will encourage students to take risks and build resiliency. Our focus will be to learn from our mistakes and to get back up when we fall. Each morning when students enter the building they will listen to the song Try Everything as well as other songs that promote risk taking, optimism and being brave.

 OPTIMISM- Our first character assembly

We had our first character assembly on Tuesday, September 26. Students were recognized for demonstrating the character trait of Optimism. The assembly was filled with energy and enthusiasm as we had our Student Voice Club host and lead the assembly, the school band rocked out with our theme song of “Try Everything”, some of our intermediate students performed a skit about optimism, and some kindergarten students taught us about how we can be positive and optimistic.

The Lice Crew will be coming to Brownridge on Wednesday, October 4th to do a lice check on students at Brownridge. While pediculosis is highly inconvenient, there are strategies to support the prevention of getting lice. Go to this website for great information:

 Brownridge Parking Lot- Drive Safe

We promote safety over convenience at Brownridge. We ask all parents, guardians, and families to drive safely in our parking lot to avoid potential injuries or accidents. Please drive slowly.

 Biking? Skateboarding? Scootering?

Many of our students ride, skateboard and/or scooter to school. These are amazing ways of staying active and healthy. We STRONGLY ENCOURAGE students to wear helmets to be safe. We have noticed a number of students not wearing helmets and this is a safety concern. It takes less than a second for an accident to occur. Please remind your student/s to wear a helmet. There is no riding on school property. Students need to walk their bikes and boards as soon as they arrive on school property.

Ordering will be taking place on School Cash Online. We are strongly encouraging all parents to sign up for School Cash Online (if they have not done so already) to minimize the amount of cash/cheques coming to the school.  We will not be handing out hot lunch forms.  In the event you cannot pay online, there will be a small quantity of hard copy forms available in the office.

We are in need of hot lunch volunteers.  Even if you can spare 1 lunch hour per month, it would be greatly appreciated!

Please note:  Lunch orders will be accepted up until Friday, September 29. Unfortunately, late orders will not be accepted.
